Inside the Himmels-Kanon recording and the gear that made it possible.

When French film producer, director, and sound engineer Nazim Djoudi was tasked with recording the world premiere of Himmels-Kanon, he knew he needed the most reliable and high-fidelity equipment available. The concert, performed by renowned classical guitarist and composer Wulfin Lieske, alongside members of the Bavarian State Orchestra, took place in the stunning UNESCO-listed Wieskirche in Bavaria. This marked the first-ever professional live concert recording in this historic venue – a challenge that required cutting-edge technology and absolute precision.

The goal of this project was to capture the intricate nuances of Lieske’s solo guitar and the accompanying string orchestra and timpani with unparalleled clarity. Djoudi had a limited setup window, a historic venue with strict constraints, and no space for a traditional FOH mixing console. To overcome these obstacles, he relied on Merging Technologies’ advanced AoIP solutions, particularly the Anubis Pro, ensuring seamless audio routing and pristine fidelity.

“I have been working with Merging Technologies for years because I need the most natural and rich sound possible,” Djoudi explains. “With the Anubis Pro, I quickly realised that not only could I achieve that, but its pristine headphone preamps became irreplaceable for my workflow, too.”

Given the limitations of the venue, Djoudi adopted an innovative, space-efficient setup that allowed him to handle both audio and video recording without disrupting the audience or musicians. His MT 48 Tree setup, with all microphones routed through the RAVENNA network, eliminated the need for a bulky mixing desk and enabled him to monitor and control audio from a compact station.

“The ability to scale my gear and route all my I/O exactly to my needs is invaluable,” he says. “In live production, you must trust your gear completely so you can focus on the performance and not worry about technical failures. Merging never lets me down.”

Merging’s technology played a crucial role in ensuring the highest recording quality. Ultra-low latency and transparent preamps preserved the delicate dynamics of the performance, while RAVENNA AoIP networking allowed for precise, flexible routing and control. Merging’s world-class AD converters ensured every detail of the live sound was faithfully captured and compact and scalable system design enabled recording an entire orchestra without clutter or intrusion.

“The Anubis Pro and Neumann MT 48 units worked flawlessly together,” Djoudi explains. “I had ultra-detailed monitoring, which meant I could make real-time microphone placement adjustments even with minimal setup time. That’s a game-changer.”

With orchestral performances demanding both high channel counts and impeccable reliability, Merging’s solutions provide an unmatched combination of flexibility, transparency, and innovation, as Djoudi explains: “I keep admiring Merging’s visionary approach. Their commitment to AoIP and pushing the boundaries of live audio makes projects like Himmels-Kanon possible. Beyond the gear, their world-class support team in Puidoux has always been there to assist with any setup or technical questions. I wouldn’t trust any other system for this kind of work.”
